Yeah, both the Beryl and Compiz project are creating some really interesting things. The problem I see with all these videos that pop up (especially for Beryl) is that they focus so much on what is ultimately useless eyecandy and not on showing a balance between eyecandy and functional benefits.
Take flaming windows, for example. It looks neat, and then you think about it for a few seconds and realize, "I'd never want to work with that on a daily basis." I'd love to see someone make a video showing only the useful things Beryl or Compiz can do, without the "oooh, shiny flashy things!" factor that ultimately does more to convince people that it's a waste more than it being something useful.
Which is ultimately the point: these projects ARE useful. But it doesn't seem anyone is making an effort to really show that.
