Since I fly United, and they still have seatback phones on most flights, I deal with chatty neighbors by excusing myself to make an important call and cancel the purchase midway through. I then have an entirely made-up conversation with one of my assistants. Poor Sue has been fired more times than she realizes...
By the way that trick doesn't work on American since they took the phones out a few years ago.
When departing before 6 am or after about 9:30 (for my sleep schedule) always book a window seat. It's easier to sleep in. Any other time, go with an aisle since it allows you get off the plane faster.
Unless you're a cowboy, your belt on its own won't set off the metal detector. I always go through wearing both my watch and belt and only have to take off one in smaller airports. I usually throw my phone, money clip, etc. in my jacket pockets (if I'm wearing one) or in my briefcase while I'm standing in line.
