And yet, Nebraska consistently wonders why the rest of the country views us as a bunch of backward bumpkins, with bib overalls and straw hats. My tax dollars are going to support sophomoric stunts perpetrated by the likes of the esteemed Pam Brown.
The problem here stems from a small, but extremely vocal group of people, headed by religious fundamentalists that feel that they have the obligation to dictate their morals and values upon the rest of the state. Geographically, Omaha sits on the Eastern border of Nebraska (right across the Missouri River from Iowa, for the geographically challenged of you). Several years ago Council Bluffs, Iowa (across the bridge from Omaha) put in riverboat casinos. Go to these casinos on any given night (or day) and the overwhelming majority of the cars in the parking lot bear Nebraska license plates. Nebraska bears the burden of the social problems that gambling creates without receiving any of the tax revenue generated by the casinos to combat the problem. The fundies have no problem with the riverboats being in Iowa as it is a "Not in My Backyard" type of situation. We, in Nebraska, can continue to polish our halos because all of the problems reside over in that morally bankrupt state of Iowa.
