Nebraska Lawmaker Proposes War With Iowa
Well, Hal asked up to lighten the mood, and this is just too rediculous to not laugh at.
LINK
Nebraska Lawmaker Proposes War With Iowa By The Associated Press LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- A Nebraska lawmaker is so fed up with constituents crossing the state border to gamble that she proposed going to war with neighboring Iowa. "I've been cautioned that the members of the Iowa Legislature might not take it kindly,' said Sen. Pam Brown of Omaha. Brown's proposed amendment read: "The sovereign state of Nebraska declares a state of hostility with the sovereign state of Iowa until such a time as the state of Iowa ceases the unjust and relentless appropriation of the resources of the citizens of Nebraska." Brown offered the amendment to a proposed constitutional amendment that would ask votes to approve casino gambling in Nebraska. She said she offered the tongue-in-cheek proposal to get her colleagues focused on the seriousness of the issue. Supporters of the casino measure have complained that Nebraskans spend an estimated $250 million a year at casinos in Council Bluff, Iowa, just across the border from Omaha. Brown later withdrew the amendment.

Every state has some type of a problem like this with their neighbors. Recently Oklahoma was invaded by cowardly Texas Democrats. Kansas has sued Colorada several times for stealing all the water out of the Arkansas River (and in Kansas the Arkansas River is pronounced Rrr-Kansas River) Every state with some form of gambling is at odds with neighbors who don't - liquor laws vary from state to state and at times these differences almost lead to war. States that border states that allow holiday and Sunday sales place a tremendous tax drain on bordering states who do not allow such sales.

And yet, Nebraska consistently wonders why the rest of the country views us as a bunch of backward bumpkins, with bib overalls and straw hats. My tax dollars are going to support sophomoric stunts perpetrated by the likes of the esteemed Pam Brown.
The problem here stems from a small, but extremely vocal group of people, headed by religious fundamentalists that feel that they have the obligation to dictate their morals and values upon the rest of the state. Geographically, Omaha sits on the Eastern border of Nebraska (right across the Missouri River from Iowa, for the geographically challenged of you). Several years ago Council Bluffs, Iowa (across the bridge from Omaha) put in riverboat casinos. Go to these casinos on any given night (or day) and the overwhelming majority of the cars in the parking lot bear Nebraska license plates. Nebraska bears the burden of the social problems that gambling creates without receiving any of the tax revenue generated by the casinos to combat the problem. The fundies have no problem with the riverboats being in Iowa as it is a "Not in My Backyard" type of situation. We, in Nebraska, can continue to polish our halos because all of the problems reside over in that morally bankrupt state of Iowa.

But I'm not sure it will pass. We have the same group of people here in Ohio, and boy, can they cause a fuss. I still don't get why they actually care, (they won't be attending nickel slot nite) but they put their money where their mouth is. And they vote. Personally, I think there's not much wrong with dropping a nickel in the slot machine. People go elsewhere - why not spend it in Ohio? It will certainly create jobs. But we'll see. Closer to what the article says - I don't think of any state I'd like to declare war on. But I'd sure like to see North and South Dakota go at it. In January. |
