Quick Question:

When asked how many years of programming experience I have with a certain language, am I allowed to include academic experience?

For example, I've used C++ heavily since my senior year of high school and through college, totalling about 6 years of use. But I have not used it professionally. So, on a site like Monster, am I allowed to say I have 6 years of C++ experience? Or should I leave that out?
