I had a crappy experience in High School and a much better one in College. I can remember blowing off my homework and watching TV for hours or (much later) smoking pot. I can remember the lame busywork that was forced on me and the lack of enthusiasm from my teachers.
But you know who I blame? I don't blame my classes or the schools... I blame myself. There is a general "Apathy" that pervades the US. Nobody tries to improve themselves because nobody cares if they do. That includes parents, teachers, classmates and strangers. Ultimately though -it is up to the individual to make the choices which improve themselves.
So if there is a crisis, we as a culture have got to come together somehow to encourage the individual students to give a damn -and even if we did that -it would still be up to them.
