Ok, the new itinerary is: Paris > Lugano > Venice > Rome > (Florence) > Marseille and then back to Paris to fly out.
Florence we haven't quite decided on, so it might get dropped. Either way it's much more manageable in the time we're going to be there.
Thanks for the Euro country list, mirevolver.
I've been checking train schedules to get an idea of the time between different cities. TGV train rides have mandatory reservations, but I've been reading that it's also suggested to reserve other train rides. This makes sense since the shortest ride is from Lugano to Venice and it's ~3 hours - we wouldn't really want to be sitting around for hours on end waiting for the longer trains if we don't have reservations. However, it leaves zero flexibility if we want to stay in one city for an extra day or leave a city a day early. Any thoughts? I'm not too keen on reserving trains before we leave, leaving zero flexibility, but I also don't want to miss the 12-14 hour train from Rome to Marseille.
