one thing that can make a huge difference is the tires, maybe you should try actual snow tires on your current vehicles...
even a 4x4 with street tires wont do too well in snow/ice
at the very least make sure your tires have a M+S designation on the sidewall. to get that designation they have to meet certain tread pattern requirements that help provide traction in mud and snow.
