Like they said, that weight gain is probably muscle, since muscle weighs much more than fat. Just because you have a little excess fat doesn't mean that you're not building muscle. For example, I'm currently building lots of upper body muscle, but I'm still VERY overweight. The fat IS decreasing, however, the weight isn't coming off as fast, since I'm gaining muscle as well.
As has been mentioned, check into the college fitness facility, or if you're not comfortable there, start out by doing some training in your room (either with weights or using your body as resistance--pushups, crunches, etc) until you feel comfortable going to the gym.
Just be sure to consume less calories than you burn. Sounds obvious, but it's the truth and it's often overlooked. Just be sure to get sufficient nutrients since your body needs fuel to gain muscle and function.
My motivation won't be anything you could use, but I want to get to a point where I can easily find clothes to fit in regular stores, and I want to be able to sit in ANY seat on a roller coaster (not just the special seats for bigger people). I recommend that you find something that has meaning for you, and work towards that goal. Rewards help too (when I get to certain goals along the way, there's a certain tattoo or piercing that I'll allow myself to get, when I hit my final goal, I'm getting two large matching pieces on my ribs).
Good luck, let us know how things turn out!
