Ever consider making art dolls? There's a magazine, which is really hard to find here but I imagine really easy to get in your neck of the woods called ART DOLL and its absolutely amazing and inspiring. You just need a little sewing ability and a lot of imagination and its only as expensive as you want it to be.
And, depending on how detailed you wish to be, one doll can take months to complete (and its a fairly portable craft).
I thought of this after reading about the gourds and etching into them, people use gourds for doll making as well.
