I use the 10-22mm and I understand what you're saying about composition. This lens gets great effects on close-up shots but composing landscapes is difficult. I find that I have to force myself to see the shot as a panoramic and adjust accordingly. I like the shot and I think it's a good one, but my own personal taste would have me cropping it to a wider aspect ratio, giving it more of a panoramic feel.
As far as the contrast goes, my only suggestion would be to bracket the shots then combine the exposures into a kind of poor-mans HDR shot or something. I think that would work quite well with this particular kind of subject. You definitely have the eye, now it's just a matter of making the light work for you as best you can.
