Haven't gotten much practice with my new wide angle lens (10-20mm) and have been having issues composing shots with it. Finding it odd to work with. Not to mention this was a pain in the butt to shoot with the dark rocks against the white sky and ground.

So... how do you like the composition? How would you change it? And with the post processing, did I overdo it bringing out the red rocks and yellow in the trees or does it look ok?

I use the 10-22mm and I understand what you're saying about composition. This lens gets great effects on close-up shots but composing landscapes is difficult. I find that I have to force myself to see the shot as a panoramic and adjust accordingly. I like the shot and I think it's a good one, but my own personal taste would have me cropping it to a wider aspect ratio, giving it more of a panoramic feel.

As far as the contrast goes, my only suggestion would be to bracket the shots then combine the exposures into a kind of poor-mans HDR shot or something. I think that would work quite well with this particular kind of subject. You definitely have the eye, now it's just a matter of making the light work for you as best you can.

I think the contrasts work great.
The only suggestion I would have made would be that the left end of the line of trees have been your centerpoint, rather than the largest portion. The reason for this is two-fold; the dark thingy on the right would be out of the picture and there would be a line for the eye to follow across the shot rather than just concentrating on its center.(well, 3fold, if there was more color to the left too)
With wide-angle, the purpose should be to lead the eye across the entirety of the composition to a point of interest. It's natural to go straight for the center otherwise and with the trees where they are, we don't see the beauty around them so much.
JJ's right, you have a good eye. Keep practicing!

Thanks guys. I really been struggling with the wide angle stuff. Only have one shot that I really like so far that I may post up some day. lol. Next time I go shooting I will try to keep this stuff in mind and hopefully get better results.

That's a difficult photo to take and process and you still managed to make something out of it.

Try multiple exposures next time and blend them

when I use a wide, I like to think that I'm shooting a 8 by 3.5 when I crop it in my head.
