I think it's all about how those pants fit around the waste. Much better measure than weight. And if you had low muscle density and really started lifting you could pack on some muscle fairly quickly, even faster than the fat you drop for a period of time.

You're quoting an 8% increase. You could have been 2-3 lbs. low when you first weighed yourself and then have swung the other way most recently. That would adjust a 12 lbs. increase to perhaps only 7-8. Just thinking out loud.
