Actually, there have been places in Canada where I have done things, like held doors open for people, and been widely ignored.
I think it's more that people are just completely oblivious to anything outside of themselves anymore, so they don't notice when people are being polite, or they have a hard time believing that anyone else in this world is still polite--God forbid.
