There are currently 9 teams in the CFL.
Ottawa is on the verge, yet again, of getting a franchise that would make 10.
A CFL franchise, while costing a lot of money to run, is nowhere near the neighbourhood of any other professional team sport. In fact, if you look at the scaled down model that Montreal has made work (smaller cozy stadium) it may be possible for smaller cities or population areas to support teams.
Remember you are talking about player salaries generally under (way under) 100k, there are only 10 home games person for which you have to fill the seats (as opposed to 40 for Hockey), and TV revenue should increase with a few more teams sue to more variety for fans and increase in appeal.
What other Canadian cities (or areas) do you think could support a CFL team?
I think that the following have potential
- Maritimes - I don't know if any single city in the Maritimes could support a team but what if there was a Maritime Team.
- London, London/Kitchener-Waterloo - I think that a team in London or Kitchener-Waterloo (i.e. souwthwest Ontario) could be supported. The population is definately there. There are tons of surrounding towns.
- Quebec City
What do you think?
