but see again, he doesn't know what that SOMETHING is that is constructive, what he possibly thinks could be constructive could potentially be a land mine for you.

To be fair how will he know what something could be that makes you uncomfortable? In situations where I am not socialized for or well versed for I either withdraw into silence or complete avoidance.
I never knew what I could or could not say with this particular lady. I never knew what would or wouldn't set her off emotionally. Sometimes it would be fine one time, and the next it wasn't. It made it very challenging.
