Futurama has a future on Comedy Central
A new series of cult US toon Futurama is to be broadcast by cable channel Comedy Central, the first new episodes of the futuristic comedy since the Fox network dropped the series back in 2003.
The cable channel has greenlit at least 13 new episodes of the animated series, soon to be produced by Matt Groening (The Simpsons) with David X Cohen. The voices of original stars Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio will feature.
An option to make new episodes of the show was included in Comedy Central's 2005 deal with Twentieth Century Fox, from which it acquired the first 72 episodes that aired on the Fox network. The new and old episodes will start to air on Comedy Central from January 2008.
A Twentieth Century Fox representative said that the Fox network also has the option to air the new episodes, but added that the new series "may not fit into the channel's scheduling plans." Maybe Groening is hoping the show will follow in the footsteps of Family Guy, another toon axed by Fox but later resurrected after a cable rerun spiked DVD sales.
David Bernath, senior programming VP at Comedy Central, said his channel will be the first to air the new series. "There is a deep and passionate fan base for this intelligent and very funny show," he said. "It matches perfectly with out audience and it is great that we can offer them not just the existing library, but something they've never seen as well."
