Question - Sores on Lips

OK, I know this has probably been asked before, but I can't find it.

I get canker-sores on the inside of my lips. These aren't cold-sores; they don't blister, and they're always internal. I've never had the classical external cold-sore; seen folks with 'em all my life, but never had one myself.

Is this a type of Herpes infection? An old girlfriend recently mentioned that she also got the things frequently, since she was a kid, but that it'd seemed more frequent since our relationship. Since the aforementioned relationship was a lengthy and involved one, you can guess where this is going. Is there any chance of -internal- mouth sores transmitting a Herpes-simplex virus to the genitals?
