i like Minidiscs but I have to admit mp3 players are a lot more convenient. Minidisc players are suprisingly durable, I've abused mine (dropped it, thrown it haphazardly into bookbag, etc) and it's still fine (Sony MZ-R900). It has dents and someparts are bent but it works perfectly.
Cons are that it's a bit heavier than I'd like it to be, but I've never held a higher capacity mp3 player so I don't know about those. If I had money to get an mp3 player, I'd get a really high capacity one like an ipod (many gigs).
Realistic battery life on my md player is maybe around 18 hrs on the included rechargable battery. I also like having discs around for different music, but I think you can have playlists for that on an mp3 player. I also like being able to record with microphone on the MD player.
It's just personal preference I guess. Even though I'm an MD fan, right now, I'd rather have a high capacity mp3 player.
