It could be that the window is appearing on an area of the desktop which is off the screen (e.g. perhaps an area only visible with a higher resolution). XP usually does checks to stop this from happening, but perhaps it isn't working for some reason.
Can you right click on My Computer in the taskbar and select 'maximise'?
