One of the nicest guys that I know (long term marriage, young kid, church-goer, volunteer with several groups, etc.) has 3 big tattoos that I know of and possibly more (I've never seen him with his shirt off). I knew him for 3 or 4 years before I ever saw the tattoos. IMO, having a couple of tattoos isn't necessarily going to say anything bad about you to the outside world, especially since tattoos are a pretty established and accepted form of artwork. A lot of the peircing options are the same way.
As long as your body modifications are tasteful and not too confrontational (i.e. a portratit of Chuck D with "F*** the Police" underneath) or you don't share the more private ones freely (asking the deacon if he'd like to see your Prince Albert), have at it!
