I'm pretty mellow, look like your basic middleclass soccer mom and have a pretty prominant tattoo on my leg that I had done in 2004. I like tats when they're done well, and there's something really cool looking about a guy with a couple of piercings. They don't necessarily reflect anything negative-it's the more outlandish that garner unwanted opinions and attention.
I have a friend who is an airline pilot for a major carrier-captain, actually, with over 20 years in. He has pierced ears, tattoos down his back, on his ankles and wrists and a pierced navel. He doesn't wear his earrings on duty and the only time his tats can be seen is if he extends his arms-he greets first class passengers and on occasion his wrist tat 'pops' from his suit sleeve-but he's only gotten maybe one reaction to it from a passenger.
Do what's a reflection of you. If a tat would mean something, get it. Pierce an ear or two-they can always heal over if you don't like it. Getting them to look bad-ass is a rotten excuse. Getting them because it feels right or has meaning is perfectly fine and if some girl is 'turned off', two others won't be at all.
