Philips Shows Rollable Display

We’re getting close to electronic paper here, people. Get your panties in a bunch. Come on. We’re waiting. OK. Good.

Polymer Vision, a subsidiary of Philips, reports that they will present a portable consumer device with a “rollable display” at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin, Germany, September 2-7. The prototype, called Readius, has a monochrome 5-inch QVGA display with four grey levels that can show maximum two images per second; colour screens with quick move images aren’t possible yet.

Looks like more proof-of-concept, but if they’ve got something moving on that screen, we’re entering the diamond age
And a link to IGN's video download page, where there is a demonstration of this little thing: http://media.gear.ign.com/articles/6...77/vids_1.html

Okay people, here we have it. Some wise-ass just decided to make an electronic screen that rolls up like a piece of mylar. This enables all sorts of spiffy gadget-makin, so, I present the following query to you: what do you think this kind of technology will make possible? Of course there will be simple monitors and televisions and such, but just imagine other things this could enable - from creating a new type of teeny watch, to putting advertising on things in ways normal ink wouldn't dream of.

As for me, the first thing I'd do with this is make a phone out of it. Put a LCD on it for caller ID and clock etc, and have a good, hi-res camera built in. Pull the phone apart to dial and such via the touchscreen roll-out display. And it would be tiny when shut, RAZR size once opened.

Any other discussion about this, or other e-paper is welcome here too! We may soon have moving newspapers, or on-the-fly changable window tinting... the future is always nigh o_O

Oh, certainly, sir.
