Phillips Rollable Screen

Okay people, here we have it. Some wise-ass just decided to make an electronic screen that rolls up like a piece of mylar. This enables all sorts of spiffy gadget-makin, so, I present the following query to you: what do you think this kind of technology will make possible? Of course there will be simple monitors and televisions and such, but just imagine other things this could enable - from creating a new type of teeny watch, to putting advertising on things in ways normal ink wouldn't dream of. As for me, the first thing I'd do with this is make a phone out of it. Put a LCD on it for caller ID and clock etc, and have a good, hi-res camera built in. Pull the phone apart to dial and such via the touchscreen roll-out display. And it would be tiny when shut, RAZR size once opened. Any other discussion about this, or other e-paper is welcome here too! We may soon have moving newspapers, or on-the-fly changable window tinting... the future is always nigh o_O

Trust Philips to come up with something like that. Very innovative, and I'm sure it will have a myriad of uses, from mapping to phones to portable playing devices.

There've been several reports and interview since beginning of last year that talked about this. Good to see that they're advancing at a good pace on this project... Indeed, like Moot, several people already talked about making a mobile phone of this, they even talked about adding a layer of robotics to it, allowing it to curl around your arm automatically, making it a nice bracelet, displaying time while you wear it, and tapping your arm when you have a call, only to release on the touch of a button, and be useable as cellphone...
Me, I find it peculiar that once this thing is touchscreen-equivalent, with the powersource provided, we'll once again enter the age of scrolls, after having left it a long time ago.

Actually, there are several companies working on this, and a few products, including e-Ink, which, while it isn't QUITE as far along, has been developing this tech for a lot longer. The biggest application will be the reinvention of e-books, and a format to deliver magazines and newspapers with motion ads and video clips.

I would like Big Band music stands to incorporate this.
No need to put 3-4 sets of tunes in order each gig. No heavey books to deal with. No dog-eared pages. No turning pages. No pages flying in the wind when playing outdoors. Instant transposition for guest singers. No jumping around charts (weird repeats, DS, coda, etc.) If backlit, no stand lights. That's all I think of now. |
