My dad has an 2002 duramax that just rolled over 100,000 miles. We have had zero problems with it. It has been a great truck. On a the other hand, a buddy of mine's family has like 6 or 7 cummins between them and swear by them. They have had problems with one of them, but it has been used hard, almost abused, so it is hard to say weather it is the trucks fault or theres. I would whole heartily reccomend a duramax though.
