I don't know about the other sports but in baseball the contract is solid. The team is financially obligated to pay no matter what. They can't cut a guy and then not pay them. The only way out would be if a player refuses to play, then they can void it due to breach.

The same applies to the NBA. In reference to the NBA, you will hear the phrase "guaranteed contracts" used often, which is exactly what Kutulu described as a "solid contract".
