I don't think it becomes monetarily or quantity based, rather the issue is that the ring, which was almost an unstated contract had already been broken--a breach of contract, term loosely used of course. Hence everything that came with the contract, including the ring, must be reset.
You wouldn't buy something at a store, decide you don't want it, return it to get your money back, and still get to keep the merchandise, right?
Now unless the guy doesn't want the ring back, well it's only fair to offer to return it.
