Hey something similar for Christmas tales in Switzerland. My Swiss girlfriend told me there's a character called either 'Schwarzerpeter' (Black Peter, obviously) or 'Schmuzli' (loosly translated as... blacky? Germans/Swiss please correct me here)
Also, I do think rudolph is a later invention- as far as I know in Europe there weren't really any rudolphs around in the old days, according to my Icelandic schoolmate.
