I remember that 20/20 did a report on this. I'm sure there's a transcript of it out there. The birth defect rate from first cousins was fairly low when compared to a non-related couple.
The best benefit that I see from marrying into your own family, is that there are no new family of inlaws to deal with. They're just the same aunts and uncles and cousins as before (they just look at you two differently).
