Guy Fawkes and his co conspirators tried to off the king and his parliament and take over, as at the time being Catholic was basically illegal. Since they were Catholic, that didn't go over with the conspirators too well.
Since they were in charge, Parliament made the day they were caught and the plot stopped a holiday. These days, it doesn't really have any religious signifigance, it's just a holiday with a bonfire and fireworks. They stopped burning effigies of the pope a long time ago.
And no, it's not celebrated in the US.
