Absolutely. Bring them to the office and call home. The school was grievously out of line in their reaction.
On a side note, my 7 year old's public school had a Hallowe'en day parade, where the primary kids were encouraged to wear costumes, and they went on a walkabout of the school to show them off to the intermediate and senior kids. then they went our into the school yard and paraded around the track for group pictures. The teachers were all dressed up too.
Interestingly, the TDSB (toronto district school board) had declared that Hallowe'en was to be refered to as 'spririt day' so as not to offend non-Christians (everybody from Hindu through Wiccan) in the system. The also advised the principals not to encourage costume wearing. But since our public school observes and promotes everything from Ede to Rosh Hashana to Divalli to Christmas, and all the other occasions in between, They decided to go ahead with the Hallowe'en parade this year.
