Yes, but I've tried it on non-hub ports and machines that didn't have any hubs installed.

Several. I've got a USB2.0 DVD burner and another HDD running on this machine at this very moment.
I'm totally baffled, and hoping I'm not gonna have to just buy another one, but that's what it's starting to look like
