USB HDD not being recognized as USB 2.0...

So, I have an external enclosure for a harddrive:

http://www.kingwin.com/pdut_detail.a...teID=27&ID=230

Problem is, it isnt being recognized as USB 2.0. I'm sure that it isnt my computer--Windows and Linux are both seeing it as USB1, and I've tried it on multiple machines. I even thought it might be the cord, so I tried one that I know works as USB2.0. Nothing.

So, I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the enclosure itself. Can yall think of anything to do? Unfortunately I'm in Germany right now (was in the USA when I bought it, from NewEgg), so I can't well just return it...

Any thoughts/ideas are welcome.

That's strange. I have a twin that's slightly older. Mine has USB & 1394. Not much can be done to the enclosure besides plugging it in.

You aren't using hubs or anything? No super long USB cables? You've used other High Speed devices successfully on the same computer ports?

Yes, but I've tried it on non-hub ports and machines that didn't have any hubs installed.

Nope. Both cords I tried are less than 6ft long.

Several. I've got a USB2.0 DVD burner and another HDD running on this machine at this very moment.

I'm totally baffled, and hoping I'm not gonna have to just buy another one, but that's what it's starting to look like

Right now, I'm on an IBM T40 laptop. Like I said though, I've tried it on several machines and OSs, so I'm 99.9% sure it isnt a machine issue.

I'm pretty sure that's the generic USB2.0 driver for Win9x because it didnt have native support for it. That same thing was (the only thing) on the install CD that came with it. IIRC, the instructions were to only use that if you were on Win9x.

It is odd that it's listed under that device's name. Maybe I'll load that driver next time I boot to windows. In the meantime, can anyone think of anything else?

Windows 2000 USB Driver Stack
The Windows 2000 driver stack for USB is different from Windows XP. To support USB 2.0 on Windows 2000, a parallel (new) driver stack is needed. This driver stack will consist of Usbport.sys, Usbhub20.sys and Usbehci.sys. A host controller-specific coinstaller (Hccoin.dll) will also be provided to ensure proper Windows Update installation in the Windows 2000 scenario.

Microsoft will not provide USB 2.0 driver support on Windows 9x or earlier Windows operating systems.
For additional architectural details on the Windows XP and Windows 2000 USB driver stacks, please refer to the Windows XP Driver Development Kit (DDK).

If I read that correctly, it should work fine if I'm running XP... Which I am

Bah, why is this so difficult

Yep. Like I said though, I've tried it on several machines, that I know to be working just fine. It's not a problem with the machine; it's got to be something with the enclosure.

Just checked the driver download from Kingwin.com, and it's definitely just for Win9x.

It's worth writing them. (KingWin) That enclosure uses a different chipset than mine. If I had one I might dig around with the debugger for device declarations & negotiation, but even if it were patchable that'd be the last resort. This should be in their court.

Well, I emailed customer support about it. I suppose we'll see if they can do anything about it...
