I bought a used car from a my mother's colleague about 2 years ago and its been running suprisingly well. They didn't want to sell it to a dealer because the dealers didn't give it much value (because of cosmetic stuff and broken AC, nonessential things like that).
Back then, I didn't know what to research for beforehand and what to check for when examining the car. I guess I've been extremely lucky that there's nothing wrong with it so far. (Just some sounds from the rear when I have to take sharp turns, but that's probably for another thread)
What about buying from a mechanic? Sometimes they have one or two cars for sale in their shop. We weren't really considering it but a mechanic offered.
