Buy: Oblivion, Crackdown
Consider: Prey, Perfect Dark Zero
Crackdown
from developer Real Time Worlds and publisher Microsoft
It's like GTA:VC with elements of Spiderman2 and Prince of Persia
You're a government agent sent out to kill some gangs, however you like
Features include:
- Quality multiplayer (including jump-in, jump-out online co-op)
- Massive city (including climbable buildings with mucho platforming)
- Extremely open gameplay with optional location-spawned quests
- Open character development (5 skills - strength, agility, firearms, explosives, driving; Will you be able to scale the wall or snipe from a distance? Depends on what you do a lot. You can beat the game with any specialty, so you do whichever you enjoy most until you are tough enough to take on the bosses.)
- Steal a car or use one of 3 upgradable special Agent Cars (sports car, offroad vehicle, battering ram truck)
- Decent next-gen, comic-book-style graphics (with stacks of items staying where you put them longer, large random crowds, urban feel)
- Decent impact on the world (if you take out the chief mechanic for a gang, the gang will drive beat up crap, etc)
- When you build up a skill, it shows up visually: better drivers have nicer special cars, stronger characters look more muscular, etc
- DNA injection to give temporary skill boost, derived from previously played character or another player online
- Option to see special challenges and other players' scores on city billboards - highest fall=8345ft, for example
- High replayability
- Questions: Deathmatch? In-person Co-op? Sense of humor? Load times?
- Developer at RTW says "It sounds nerdy, but I love saying 'Well, I can't get up there, but I reckon if I bring four cars and stack them up, I can get to places I'm sure I'm not meant to get to.' It's very satisfying to realize that you can 'break' the system to that level."

Prey will at least be fun to rent and might be perfect for frag fest fans (MC Escher eat your heart out, look ma no body; walk on walls, change gravity with a wall switch, pop in and out of portals, shoot thru portals; spirit walk ala Native American mythology)
