I saw it, and I loved it. It's eye candy, plain and simple. It wasn't written by Hironobu Sakaguchi, who probably thought he closed up the story well enough that it didn't warrant a new story line. So already you can't expect the story to be anything more than "Hey, watch your favorite characters kick the crap out of this new bad guy!" But I think they did a pretty good job bringing up a new conflict, considering the game's story was "kill Sephiroth, repel meteor, and save the world". They killed Sephiroth. Holy repelled meteor. The world was saved. Pretty cut and dry. Do you expect the movie to show Tifa's struggle to get a liquor license for 7th Heaven or Cloud fighting to put coversheets on TPS reports? Of course they're going to introduce a problem that can be resolved in a 90 minute movie.
I thought the fight scenes were awesome. I'm so glad they didn't try to ground the characters' moves in reality. To see them doing incredible things in the game, then doing nothing more than standard martial arts in the movie would have been a big letdown. Seeing Cloud using Blade Beam and Omnislash, and even Barret using Big Shot, was great.
I don't see why a lot of people are jumping at the chance to complain about it. It's a fun movie and the cg is beautiful. I'd recommend this to any fan of Final Fantasy, just don't walk into it on a high horse.
