My recommendations are Deus Ex, Half Life and Max Payne.
DX is a great blend of FPS and RPG.
HL is arguably the best game ever in terms of how it revolutionalized the FPS genre. Rock solid gameplay and engaging story. It's the gold standard.
Max Payne lacks the puzzle elements of the above, but has great gameplay and atmosphere. It's also, therefore, the most combat heavy.
You should be able to get any of those for cheap and have a good time playing them.
