First person shooter
Im looking to buy a first person shooter game, but i dont know which one to get. I like playing my MGS3 game for that aspect of it. Which one should i get. I could even start with an older game, since i have none of this genre.

Try "SWAT 4." Your a SWAT leader who gets to control your own team however you like. Its simulation style, so its hard, but I got way into it. Try it out if your looking for a great first person shooter.

Is there a particular genre of FPS you're looking for?
My favorite (at least, at the moment) are the Unreal Tournament games. You can get UT2K4 for $20 new, I believe. It's a fantastic game, but it's almost entirely about the multiplayer. Single player is sort of a joke in that game. Very much a run and gun sort of game. No realism here. Other favorites: Half Life (the original. I enjoyed HL2, but never quite as much as Half Life), which can be bought with a bunch of expansions for about $20. Counter-Strike (a free modification) is one of the most addictive online FPS ever. I hate the people who play the game, but I fucking love the game. Of course, if you do buy HL2 instead, you can play CS: Source, which is just a better looking version of the same game. Far Cry is a pretty decent single player game, and somewhat challenging in some parts. The Medal of Honor games are great for WWII style games. Fun campaigns, pretty good multiplayer. Stay away from Brothers in Arms... definitely not worth it. The Battlefield games are pretty fun, as well, but once again they're all about the multiplayer. Good objective based multiplayer action. And the game that got me totally addicted to FPS, and still one of my favorites... Rainbow6. A squad based counter-terrorism theme FPS. There have been lots of sequels/expansions, and they've all been fun (though I thought Rogue Spear was a little disappointing). That was the game in which I was first accused of cheating online. Ahh, the memories. |

SWAT 4 is great, but it get's old, not being able to kill those perps.
I'd recommend you went with the old Half Life, or Half Life 2. Great games, else, you could hold out for F.E.A.R., which looks promising. Overall, there are so many, grab some demos and give'em a rip!

I'd say try Half Life or one of the three Quake games. The downloadable modifications for these games are extensive (and mostly free), so you'll have a hard time becoming bored. Team-based games like Team Fortress, Counter Strike, and Urban Terror provide a more structured form of play than the traditional "deathmatch" mode. If you're interested in an only slightly modified gameplay, I'd suggest modifications like Rocket Arena or OSP for Quake 3. Single player mode seems to have long lost it's allure in FPS gaming, so I don't know what to tell you if you're strictly looking for something story-driven like MGS3.

By far the best in my opinion, Call of Duty.
Brilliant single-player campaigns and the multiplayer is immense, especially with the United Offensive add-on. Also Battlefield 2 is brilliant, for a more up-to-date war experience

i would say play dues ex...its fps+rpg elements (NOT dues ex 2)
call of duty/medal of honor also good far cry is good but gets boring later coz of same weapons, same scenery hl2 also fine for a change of pace. instead of serious sam....try out painkiller...mindless killing...great atmosphere and gfx(one of the 2 games 1ve played twice)

Quake 3 for the best multiplayer combat (bots are decent too). Great modability, get Promode.
Quake 2 has an enjoyable single player, though old. Giants is a really quality old game, amazing single player. The only medal of honor game I've played is Allied Assault, and it was quite good. |

My recommendations are Deus Ex, Half Life and Max Payne.
DX is a great blend of FPS and RPG. HL is arguably the best game ever in terms of how it revolutionalized the FPS genre. Rock solid gameplay and engaging story. It's the gold standard. Max Payne lacks the puzzle elements of the above, but has great gameplay and atmosphere. It's also, therefore, the most combat heavy. You should be able to get any of those for cheap and have a good time playing them. |

When my modem was down, I went out and picked up Far Cry for $10, was a great buy.
If money isn't an issue, Half-Life 2 Silver Edition will get you HL2, along with HL1 with expansion packs, Counterstrike Condition Zero (which has single-player CS), and the online new and old CS. |

Havent seen it recommended but theres always Halo.
Thats what I am playing at the moment. There are some really good sections - The Library for example where it gets all Half Life crossed with Serious Sam. Very straight forward to play too |
