Hey, I grew up hearing the "water burning carburetor" story.
Seriously, acetone has less energy than gasoline but there are a few ways it could help:
1) Your injectors are incredibly fouled. Improvement would be as obtained by adding normal fuel system cleaner (Redline, Techron,...) and would not require continued use once the effect is achieved.
2) Your timing is advanced too far, isn't computer corrected, and the acetone bumps octane to correct. (the ratios involved mean you better add Tinkerbell dust to the mix)
3) Oxygenate acts to improve combustion. (The full Merlin treatment would be required given ratios involved)
4) Most promising effect is that you drive more gently. There's no mistaking the curative potential of sugar-pills. If it floats your boat...
Bad effects could be:
1) Oxygenate harms fuel system lines and seals similar to MTBE and methanol. Definitely an issue but systems vary so this depends on the vehicle.
2) You spill it on paint.
3) You ingest it, or get enough on your hands to eventually qualify for Superfund status, and your pets team up to bury you one night.
4) Neighbors see you do it.
Remember, Techron is 4bottles/$10 at Costco.
