When you reach Aguas Calientes, be sure to take a stroll behind the train station near the field where all the guides stage their equipment. Near the end of the trail is a small wooden bridge extending to a gated area that is manned by a security person. This is the rear entrance to a beautiful and well hidden resort. My wife and I stayed there for a few days in 2001 while on our honeymoon. I too am an amateur photographer and if you want some truly beautiful shots of orchids (hundreds of varieties) and hummingbirds, definitely plan on spending some time there. Ask for Moises, he truly loves his orchids.

Also, don't miss an opportunity to make the hike up Wayna Picchu; it's the large mountain that stands directly behind Macchu Picchu. It takes about two hours, and the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking. I don't want to hijack your thread, but if you would like a sample pic, I would be willing to post. Also, ask one of the guides about the little known ruins deeper in the jungle nearby.
Peru is a beautiful country, you're going to have a blast. I look forward to your next series of photos.
