photographer's dream: peru, machu piccu, and the galapagos
Just got back from that trip, and I had some of the best photography opportunites I've ever had in my life. I'm going to post all the pictures I feel are worth posting, but there are so many, that I'm going to put all the pictures from each day in a seperate post. Some of you might be anxious for pictures from the galapagos, and trust me I'm just as anxious to get to them, but they were the later half of the trip. Here is the first day:
Flew in to Lima, then Cusco. From Cusco we drove to our hotel in the sacred valley, checked in, and then went to lunch at a private "hacienda" up on a mountain. From there we went to visit the Inca ruins at Ollanta y Tambo. What an amazing trip. You're right, I'm very much looking forward to the other photos.
One of my dream trips is to Peru to visit the Incan ruins. Of the photos, I'm going to agree with cello on #2. I've always loved mountain photos where the haze sits low and the silhouettes of the mountains rise above the haze. Great shots!

Wow, those are incredible. And I agree with liking numbers 2 and 11 the best. They really are fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

spectacular.... I love the colors in the first two -- and the stairway in 11 - I'd love on my wall.. it's beautiful....

Day 2:
We drove to a local markey called Pisaq, then went to an area called Maras, where we visited an Incan ruin named Moray, and a huge salt mine fed by a curiously salty stream coming down from the mountain. Pics 26 and 27 are interesting - actually, #27 is my favorite of the second round. Could you give a description of what I'm seeing here. I can't quite make out what it is, but the geometrics are very appealing to the eye.

When you reach Aguas Calientes, be sure to take a stroll behind the train station near the field where all the guides stage their equipment. Near the end of the trail is a small wooden bridge extending to a gated area that is manned by a security person. This is the rear entrance to a beautiful and well hidden resort. My wife and I stayed there for a few days in 2001 while on our honeymoon. I too am an amateur photographer and if you want some truly beautiful shots of orchids (hundreds of varieties) and hummingbirds, definitely plan on spending some time there. Ask for Moises, he truly loves his orchids.
Here's an URL with some more info: http://www.inkaterra.com.pe/mpph/index.html Also, don't miss an opportunity to make the hike up Wayna Picchu; it's the large mountain that stands directly behind Macchu Picchu. It takes about two hours, and the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking. I don't want to hijack your thread, but if you would like a sample pic, I would be willing to post. Also, ask one of the guides about the little known ruins deeper in the jungle nearby. Peru is a beautiful country, you're going to have a blast. I look forward to your next series of photos.

Lewis, I'm already done with the whole trip, and uploading the pictures day by day. That is where I stayed (not too unknown anymore though)...got some pretty good pictures there, not too many though. And I regret it, but we didn't have any time to hike up wayna piccu.

We woke up, had free time in the morning so I walked around the gardens and took some more pictures there, then we took a train to Machu Piccu. its a little complicated. There is a town at the base of the mountain, I stayed there. Then there is about a 30 min bus ride up the mountain from there...there is a single hotel up at the top actually within the machu piccu sanctuary, and from there its only about a 5 min walk into the heart of the ruins. So I guess the answer is yes, though I did not. But if you are talking about for night pictures, you have to leave the ruins by a certain time and get there at a certain time (though its rediculously early, like 5 or 6), but you cannot camp on the actual ruins themselves. That was a long answer to a simple question, but there it is.
