L88 (427 Chevy BB) officially had a 6800 rpm redline in 1967. Certain Chevy literature stated that these engines could, however, be revved to 7600 in drag racing, and at least 7000 on a road course.
The 1966 L72 (427 BB), 1970 LT-1 (350 SB), and several other solid lifter engines were also up around 6500 rpm.
I only know Chevy engines. Other manufacturers might have had competing designs. New engines are vastly improved, though. The old ones with redlines this high usually had poor torque curves, and required constant tuning to keep in spec.
