Personally I feel that it would have been quite valid to firmly remove the guy from the line when he cut in (
not to hit him, but to "remove" him gently, yet firmly) but waiting until he had got his ticket ad then belting him was pointless and dangerous.
I feel sorry for anyone that takes delight in someone else's pain, even if they were behaving badly and may have in some way "deserved" punishment.
