Coppertop hit it right on the head. The NHL lost a year's worth of revenue and now HAS to explore other options to recover that money to make the NHL economically viable. I can see them having this playoff system in place for a few years and then magically the commissioner decides to revert back to the old system.
The NHL needs money and also needs to win the fans back in the non-hockey cities like Miami, San Jose, etc. This new playoff system seeks to do just that.
