You have a lot of money to work with! This is the exact computer I'd build if I were in your situation:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939 2.0 GHz - $190
ABIT FATAL1TY AN8 Motherboard - $185
eVGA GeForce 7800 GTX PCI-E Videocard - $600
Western Digital 36 GB Raptor HDD - Free
1 GB PC3200 - Free
Case - $100
LITE-ON Beige IDE DVD Burner - $46
Samsung Floppy Drive - $10
PSU - Free
The total is $1131 before shipping. If you need mouse/keyboard/monitor/cables, you have extra money to buy them with. I'm sure there will be a dozen replies saying the processor should be better, but for a gaming PC, there is no reason to go past this Athlon 64 model. The videocard and RAM is what powers today's games, 3 or 4 times moreso than your processor.
What kind of PSU do you have? You'll need a damn good one for the videocard and CPU. I suggest a 400w Enermax Noisetaker if you're not sure if your current PSU is good enough. You can add another Raptor in there if ya want as well...plenty of money leftover. Hope this helps!
