Help Me Build My New Gaming Rig
Well, my computer finally gave up on me so I decided it is time to upgrade and I am planning on upgrading almost everything. Before I start, I was wondering if anyone was willing to give me some ideas for components. At this point, I am leaning towards AMD for my processor because I can run a 64 bit chip on a 32 bit OS until longhorn comes out and then I can get the full potential of the chip. Still, I have had good luck with intel so I will consider doing an intel buildup. I am willing to spend about $1,500 max. Currently I have 1 gig of ddr 400 ram, a 36 gig 10,000 rpm raptor hard drive, and a decent power supply left over from the old computer. Thanks to everyone for any help in advance.

You have a lot of money to work with! This is the exact computer I'd build if I were in your situation:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939 2.0 GHz - $190 ABIT FATAL1TY AN8 Motherboard - $185 eVGA GeForce 7800 GTX PCI-E Videocard - $600 Western Digital 36 GB Raptor HDD - Free 1 GB PC3200 - Free Case - $100 LITE-ON Beige IDE DVD Burner - $46 Samsung Floppy Drive - $10 PSU - Free The total is $1131 before shipping. If you need mouse/keyboard/monitor/cables, you have extra money to buy them with. I'm sure there will be a dozen replies saying the processor should be better, but for a gaming PC, there is no reason to go past this Athlon 64 model. The videocard and RAM is what powers today's games, 3 or 4 times moreso than your processor. What kind of PSU do you have? You'll need a damn good one for the videocard and CPU. I suggest a 400w Enermax Noisetaker if you're not sure if your current PSU is good enough. You can add another Raptor in there if ya want as well...plenty of money leftover. Hope this helps! -Lasereth

Hell yeah Lasereth, that looks like a killer setup. I looked at that board but I wasnt too sure about abit boards. I currently have a Thermaltake Silent Purepower W0010 ATX 480W Power Supply so I think that should work. I was also looking at a bit beefier of a processor with the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ ClawHammer/Hammer 939 socket but if I go down a bit on the processor that should leave me more for the videocard. Thanks again

A very useful site to take a look at, they have builds for different price ranges and you can always mix and match with your own preferences. |
