If you're looking for a scary game in the meantime, pick up System Shock 2 from your local retailer's bargain bin. It's a little dated, but I guarantee at least three pairs of soiled undergarments.

I disagree. I too was in the beta. I had a remarkable lack of lag in the last few patches, none at all in large battles. I and many other players thought the balance was excellent.

You must have been playing a different game than I was, or you haven't played a balanced FPS before. TR DC maxes are incredibly overpowered, and the chaingun is ridiculously accurate even at 100m+ ranges. Vanu and NC heavy weapons and MAXes are crap compared to them, and it showed every night when you look at the global map and see 4+ locked TR continents and maybe one apiece to Vanu and NC.

The devs have promised content updates (which sound pretty cool) giving it reason to play for more than a few weeks.

It's pretty typical form for SOE to ignore glaring gameplay flaws and instead attempt to appease people with "content updates", generally in the form of $20-40 expansion packs.

I played a different faction and I can say that a well lead, well organized squad (most squads are "pick up" for that night only. There are other groups called Organizations that are persistant.) can really make a difference. 2 or 3 squads working together even more so.

This is another complaint of mine. Because the hit detection / aiming system is screwed up, skill doesn't really matter in Planetside. Because skill doesn't matter, well organized squads don't matter. All you have to do to win is join TR, get 10 DC MAXes together, and zerg-rush until you win.

I loved the Planetside beta (I was in the exclusive and stopped playing just last night). The devs are amazing people, the game looks great, it plays well on my new system I just built for it and I had more fun than I could shake a stick at.

The devs are nice guys, I'll give you that. The best performance that I got during beta, I would describe as mediocre and I have a P4 1.5ghz, 512mb DDR ram, and a GeForce 4400. As for fun, it ended after constant TR DC max and Reaver zergs.

My advice, please go read the reviews and decide for yourself. If you like online FPS, this might be money well spent.

If you are looking for a massively-multiplayer version of Quake 3, Half-Life, or UT, you will be very disappointed. If you are looking for a hack of EQ with guns and rocket launchers but no real purpose or reward, you'll love it.
