I heard someone say that part of the attraction of the course in this shape is that it makes the players look mortal. I don't turn on a tournament to watch players play like I do (well, OK, I'm lying--I can't shoot near par!), and I don't want to see the ball rolling like it hit the parking lot instead of the green. The thick roughs don't bother me, but the rock hard greens were just no fun to watch.
