Did anyone else watch the US Open this weekend? I watched quite a bit of the first third and fourth rounds... What a BRUTAL course that was. Those greens were insane, and the rough was so rough.

In the end I was sad to watch Gore and Goosen implode so badly. I actually was caught up with the whole Gore love in, and I was cheering for him. How many shots did he lose on the last 18 holes? He started at E or +2 I think right? And he ended up +18!!! That is insane!

Mainly I was just hoping someone other than Tiger would win. I have to hand it to Tiger though, I mean, you can never, ever count that guy out. Bogeys on 1 and 2 and he still was able to refocus, turn his game around and make a legitimate charge for the lead.

Good on the Kiwi Campbell, though. I would argue that not many people saw him winning this tourney. He played a solid round on Sunday...

Campbell deserved it. He played the course well. Tiger could have won if he would have been more aggressive on the early round play. He fell to number 17 again though. I was hoping Tiger would come back and win. I didn't expcet Goosey to win. There was just something about him that didn't say "I want it". Tiger looks good heading out. He's got that look in his eye that has been missing for a year or so now.

The course was brutal but not as difficult as the players made it. If you hit the fairways and land in the center of the green you're good to go. There were a few holes where you could shoot for the flag but if you missed, you were screwed. I was happy to see the course in such great shape.

I can't wait to watch the LPGA open coming up.

You absolutely had to hit the fairways. If you were in the fairway you could spin your ball into the green and stop it. If you were coming out of the rough or a bunker, you had to land it before the green and let it trickle on.

tiger didn't need to hit the fairways as he's strong as a fucking ox, but his putting was just terrible. His drives are pure beauty once again. The thing about #2 is, you couldn't just bounce it onto the green. You had to hit a 20 ft area and minimize your spin. Vijay and Mick found that out the hard way.

I heard someone say that part of the attraction of the course in this shape is that it makes the players look mortal. I don't turn on a tournament to watch players play like I do (well, OK, I'm lying--I can't shoot near par!), and I don't want to see the ball rolling like it hit the parking lot instead of the green. The thick roughs don't bother me, but the rock hard greens were just no fun to watch.

I agree with that, in part. I do like to see the professionals struggle a little, and I do like it when underdogs do well, but I also like to see everyone playing their best. Thats' the funny thing about golf though. That Tiger can win a championship one week and miss the cut on the next. Being a fan and follower of Canadian Mike Weir, I know what it's like to follow a worst to first to worst golfer. I like some consistency, and I think that if you're the best at the sport you should always be able to make a good showing almost every time.

His putting wasn't terrible I don't think - the greens are just that difficult. You saw Campbell do a few pitch and runs onto the green. The lob wedge was a lot less useful at this tourney, there were a lot of good shots being played long the ground, like at the British.

On the Golf Channel today they were focused almost entirely on how he was playing a lot of shots on the ground as opposed to hitting them high in the air when around the greens.

This is the thing though, the greens <i>weren't</i> rock hard. They were just designed to have drop offs and run offs all the way around. Think of a turtle's shell and that's similar to the style of greens they were playing. The course was in tip-top shape.


Anyway, I do agree with the fact that Tiger should have played the ball better. I was rooting for Toms but.. he seems to be on the down slope lately. That's just the way it is in golf. You have to be perfect on nearly every shot in order to stay consistent. That's a tough feat for anyone to do.
