I disagree. I too was in the beta. I had a remarkable lack of lag in the last few patches, none at all in large battles. I and many other players thought the balance was excellent. The devs have promised content updates (which sound pretty cool) giving it reason to play for more than a few weeks. As for the weapons, I'm assuming you are talking about the Terran Republic? I'm not so very sure. I played a different faction and I can say that a well lead, well organized squad (most squads are "pick up" for that night only. There are other groups called Organizations that are persistant.) can really make a difference. 2 or 3 squads working together even more so.
I loved the Planetside beta (I was in the exclusive and stopped playing just last night). The devs are amazing people, the game looks great, it plays well on my new system I just built for it and I had more fun than I could shake a stick at.
I play as an engineer/medic type running around healing and fixing people...every once and awhile unslinging my rifle to off a few bad guys. (Sometimes much more than once and awhile). I saw some HUGE battles (couple of hundred people) over bridges that were just amazing.
My advice, please go read the reviews and decide for yourself. If you like online FPS, this might be money well spent.
Oh, and yea, I'm a little bummed that D3 has no multiplayer, but I think I'll get over it.
